International Students and Canadian Immigration

Study in Canada

Every year thousands of students around the world chose to come to Canada to study at levels from kindergarten to PhD.  They chose Canada because of its competitive cost, world class educational institutions, and its full spectrum of educational opportunities in a variety of educational settings.  Canadian educational institutions enjoy an unmatched reputation for responding to the training needs of business, industry and the public service.  Research undertaken in Canadian educational institutions is of national and international importance.

In addition to the saftey and security enjoyed by all residents of Canada, Canadian educational institutions enjoy a reputation for excellence which makes Canada a very attractive country for international students.  Cultural diversity, which is a cherished hallmark of Canadian society, means that international students can easily mix in with their fellow students.

The Minister of Citizenship and Immigration made an announcement on February 20, 2009 regarding Canada's position on International Students.  The details have not yet been released by CIC, but watch here for more news.

Focus on foreign students

Canada will `substantially' boost number it allows, immigration minister says, noting Australia's lead

With an eye on foreign students as a "source of revenue," Canada will "substantially increase" the number it brings in this year, Immigration Minister Jason Kenney announced.

Australia allows 10 times the students from India that Canada does, he said at a conference in downtown Toronto for more than 1,600 unemployed or underemployed internationally educated professionals keen to figure out the secrets to finding work here.

He wouldn't elaborate on how many more students would be lured here but said they have a chance to understand the labour market and the language and put themselves on a "much faster pathway" to immigration.

Foreign students are eligible when their visas expire to apply to become permanent residents through the new Canadian Experience Class, launched last year. There were 176,116 in Canada at the end of 2007, more than 65,000 of those in Ontario.

Australia brought in 278,184 foreign students in 2007-08. Of those, 47,639 were from India.

"We are not receiving enough foreign students," Kenney said. Universities are pressing for the increase, he said.

What do you need to do to come to Canada as an international student?

  1. First of all, you need to be accepted to an educational institution in Canada.  We can help you with that because we have ties to institutions across the country at every level of education.  Many provide a two day turn around on admission.
  2. Secondly, you need to be able to show the Canadian visa authorities that you qualify for a Canadian student visa.  We can help you with that too.  We know what the visa officers need to know and how to give them the information they need in a direct and concise format.
  3. Finally, you will likely have to undergo a medical exam which is pretty straight forward.

Can you work while studying?

After you get to Canada and start studying you may decide that you would like to work while you are studying.  We can advise you if you will be able to do that at the institution you will attend.

Can you stay in Canada after you complete your studies?

After you complete your studies you may be able to stay in Canada and work for one or two years depending on where you are studying. We can help you with that.

Can you stay in Canada permanently?

If you decide to immigrate permanently to Canada you will get points for studying in Canada and for working in Canada.  In some case an application for permanent residence in Canada may be made while you are still a student.  We can help you to submit an application for permanent residence if you qualify.

Returning home

If you finally decide to return to your home country, you will have happy memories of your time in Canada and friends from around the world you have met in Canada.

How do I get started?

Send us an email and if you qualify, we'll get started right away on getting you a student visa!
